BEETLES and the Research Group To Present at NAAEE Conference 2021 (North American Association of Environmental Educators)

We’re pleased to share that we will be presenting five sessions at this year’s North American Association of Environmental Educators (NAAEE) Conference 2021.

Join us as we mark an NAAEE milestone! Our 50th-anniversary conference—to be held virtually—will celebrate the power of connection and the profound, restorative role of the natural world in our lives. Together, we’ll reflect on all we’ve learned about the power of environmental education to bring people of all backgrounds and disciplines together to solve our most pressing problems and to create more just and sustainable communities. (Description from NAAEE conference page.)

The BEETLES Team, and the Research and Impact Group at the Lawrence Hall of Science will present the following sessions. We hope to see you there!

SESSIONS

Centering Equity in Professional Learning: Challenges, Successes, and Impact on Practice

At the onset of BEETLES, we believed equity was at the core of our work; yet conversations with partners and evaluators revealed gaps in how we were centering equity. Drawing from a five-year NSF study, we will share insights and invite discussion on how to center equity in professional learning. A live roundtable discussion presented by Jedda Foreman & Valeria Romero.

Thursday, October 14 from 11:00am to 11:40am ET

Building Capacity for Equity: Learnings From California Outdoor Science Organizations

Learn how 10 California-based residential outdoor science organizations spent 2.5 years building capacity to foster equitable, inclusive and culturally relevant work environments. In this session, we’ll share what we learned from our time with these organizations and professionals of color across the length of the program. A live traditional presentation by Laura Rodriguez, Valeria Romero, Jedda Foreman, and Craig Strang.

Thursday, October 14 from 6:15pm to 6:55pm ET

Supporting Student Resilience by Using Outdoor Spaces for Health, Learning, and Play

The founding partners of the National COVID-19 Outdoor Learning Initiative and key collaborators will share resources and ideas related to the benefits of using the abundant fresh air and access to nature to reduce virus transmission and improve students’ physical and mental health and well-being, learning, and play during the pandemic and beyond. A live hands-on presentation by Karen Cowe of Ten Strands, Craig Strang of Lawrence Hall of Science, Andra Yeghoian of San Mateo County Office of Education, and Rachel Pringle of Green Schoolyards America

Friday, October 15 from 9-10am PT/12-1:00pm ET

The Impact of COVID-19 on Environmental and Outdoor Science Programs Poster

In April 2020 and April 2021, we conducted two surveys to learn about the impact of COVID-19 on the environmental and outdoor science education field. Results revealed devastating setbacks and financial losses, as well as innovative responses to adapt to the moment. This presentation highlights key takeaways for moving forward. Presented by Aujanee Young, Melissa Collins and Valeria Romero, all of the BEETLES Research Team.

(available for continuous asynchronous viewing throughout the two-week extended conference (October 4–15) and through April 2022)

Organizational Features and Capacity Building Across Heterogeneous Outdoor Science Programs

This work examines capacity-building to promote high-quality science teaching in outdoor science programs. We investigate variability in uptake of resources (professional learning sessions, student activities), based on variation in program characteristics (e.g., program/staffing structure; audience characteristics). Implications for broader dissemination of materials in outdoor education are discussed. Presented by Aujanee Young, Melissa Collins and Valeria Romero, all of the BEETLES Research Team.

(available for continuous asynchronous viewing throughout the two-week extended conference (October 4–15) and through April 2022)
